PM hosts first Realm of New Zealand leaders’ meeting in Auckland

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the leaders of the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau met in Auckland on Thursday for what the government is calling the inaugural Realm of New Zealand Leaders' Meeting, according to Beehive.govt.nz, the official site for New Zealand government releases.
The meeting brought together Luxon, Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, Niue Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi and Ulu of Tokelau Alapati Tavite. It's the first time the four have sat down together as leaders of the Realm of New Zealand, the constitutional grouping that links the three Pacific territories with New Zealand.
"These are our closest relationships. We are all part of the Realm of New Zealand, bound by history, culture, the deep connections between our peoples, and our special constitutional arrangements," Luxon said.
What was discussed
According to the Beehive statement, the leaders talked through their priorities for the wider Pacific region and how the Realm partnership could be used more effectively. They also discussed next week's Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, where the four will all be present alongside other regional heads of government.
Luxon noted he had previously met each of the three leaders individually, but this was the first time all four had convened together in this format. "While I have met with Niue Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi, Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Ulu of Tokelau Alapati Tavite before, this is the first time we have met together as leaders of the Realm," he said.
Niue's role in proposing the meeting
Luxon credited Tagelagi with initiating the gathering and co-hosting it alongside him. "I also want to acknowledge the leadership of Prime Minister Tagelagi, who proposed this initiative and co-hosted the meeting today," he said.
The Prime Minister described the four relationships as distinct from one another but united by a shared constitutional bond. "Our relationships with the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau are all distinct, but we share a special connection as Realm partners," he said.
The Beehive release did not detail specific outcomes or decisions from the meeting, nor set out any formal agenda item beyond the discussions described. With the Pacific Islands Forum due to take place within days, the four leaders are expected to continue those conversations in a wider regional setting.
