History and Recent Developments
St Heliers Library is housed in a heritage-protected building that was built in 1926 as the Tamaki West Road Board offices and fire station. It became home to a public library in 1931. The building was assessed as earthquake-prone twice, first in 2017, and again in 2020, and it underwent earthquake strengthening and renewal work. St Heliers Library reopened on 15 August 2023 after about a year of operating from a temporary site.
