Next-Generation CCTV Saves Auckland Tow Yard Tens of Thousands in Installation Costs

Last Updated on October 10, 2025
An Auckland tow yard has slashed surveillance costs by installing a high-tech pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera capable of covering the entire site with a single lens.
The site, which spans over 100 metres from end to end, previously faced major blind spot issues and shares Auckland’s rising concerns about theft, vandalism, and trespassing. Instead of installing dozens of fixed cameras, the property owner worked with professional commercial security installers Auckland CCTV to design a smarter system.
Smarter Surveillance, Fewer Cameras
The key upgrade was a PTZ camera with 25x optical zoom. This device can rotate on demand or move automatically to track movement and can clearly capture license plates at 115 metres. Even at its maximum zoom, faces are recognisable.
The camera links with other on-site cameras. When one detects motion, it signals the PTZ to rotate and zoom into the relevant zone, even if it was facing in the opposite direction. This means intruders trying to hide between rows of cars can be followed in real time.
According to the site manager, it’s already paid for itself.
“We would’ve needed at least 17 more standard cameras to get the same coverage,” he said. “This one camera did the job for less money and way better results.”
A 22-Camera System Built for Fast Response
The full setup now includes 12 new cameras added on top of the existing 10, creating a 22-camera surveillance system. While multiple entry points once made the site difficult to monitor, the upgraded system now allows for near-instant visual confirmation of any disturbance.
The manager says the upgrade has saved him hours of manual checks each week.
“I used to get out of bed and drive down to the yard every time the alarm triggered. Now I can just check the footage on my phone, zoom in, and know if it’s something serious.”
Cost-Efficient Coverage for Auckland Commercial Properties
Installing multiple high-resolution cameras across a wide property can cost tens of thousands of dollars. But Auckland’s wave of tech adoption changes the landscape completely. By using auto-tracking and human detection tech, the yard owner avoided much of that cost while gaining better visibility.
This kind of system is becoming more common in commercial properties and industrial security systems across New Zealand, especially where break-ins and lost assets are frequent.
“Business owners want fewer false alarms and faster reactions. That’s what this kind of system delivers,” said a technician from Auckland CCTV.
Smarter Tools, Better Protection for Auckland
As crime becomes more coordinated, traditional CCTV is no longer enough. Systems using Artificial Intelligence with advancements such as smart movement detection and facial tracking allow site managers to take action before damage or theft occurs.
The rise in commercial security systems like this one reflects a growing shift toward proactive defence.
From Auckland to other parts of New Zealand, tech like this is helping business owners reduce risk, save time, and protect against loss.
