More Puketāpapa sports fields set to get floodlights

Auckland Council says more sports fields in Puketāpapa are being lined up for floodlighting, a move it says will give local teams more chances to train and play once the sun goes down.
According to Auckland Council, Keith Hay Park, the largest park in the Puketāpapa local board area, is among the sites earmarked for the upgrade.
What’s changing at the fields
The council’s announcement frames the project as a way to stretch the useful hours of Puketāpapa’s sports grounds beyond daylight, which matters in the shorter days of autumn and winter when many local clubs currently lose training time once the sun sets. Floodlighting existing fields is a common way councils extend the use of grounds without needing to build new ones, letting more teams share the same space across a longer evening window.
What it means for local clubs
For sporting codes based in Puketāpapa, better lighting generally translates into more flexible training schedules, particularly for adult and junior teams that currently have to compete for limited daylight slots after school and work hours. Improved floodlighting can also support more evening fixtures during winter sports seasons, when demand for field time is usually highest.
Auckland Council has not yet detailed a full project timeline, budget, or the complete list of fields involved beyond Keith Hay Park. Residents and club members wanting the specifics of when work will begin, and which other grounds are included, will need to watch for further updates from the council as the project develops.
