Two long-serving members of staff at Mount Roskill Library have notched up a combined 55 years working for Auckland Council, according to Auckland Council‘s Central Auckland news update.

Jenny Cook joined the council in 1997, while her colleague Abebe Mekonnen started a few years later, in 2000. Between them, the pair have now clocked up more than five decades of service, most of it spent behind the desk at the Mount Roskill branch.

Two Careers, One Library

The council’s announcement doesn’t go into detail about the specific roles each has held over the years or how the library itself has changed since the late 1990s, but the milestone points to a level of continuity that’s increasingly rare in public-facing council roles. Staff who stay with one branch, or one organisation, for this long tend to become familiar faces to generations of regular library users, from parents bringing in toddlers for storytime through to those same children returning years later as students or job seekers.

Mount Roskill Library, part of the wider Puketāpapa local board area, serves a community that has seen significant change over the decades Cook and Mekonnen have worked there, though the council material doesn’t detail specific programmes or renovations tied to their tenure.

What It Means Locally

For Auckland Council, the milestone is being marked as a point of pride within its Central Auckland operations, part of a broader recognition of long-serving staff across its library network. The council hasn’t detailed any specific event or ceremony held for the pair, but the acknowledgement itself signals the value placed on institutional knowledge within community facilities like any of Aucklands libraries, which often rely on staff continuity to maintain relationships with regular patrons and local groups.

No further details were provided about what comes next for either Cook or Mekonnen, or whether either plans to continue at the branch. The council’s note simply marks the occasion of their combined 55 years of service to date.
